What it does
Replaces Shopify's default cart with a sliding cart drawer that opens when customers add to cart. Adds trust badges, urgency timers, free-gift "claim" mechanics, and cart-level upsells — all of which instantly improve conversion rate vs the default Shopify cart.
If you're sending traffic direct to checkout (rare — most operators aren't), you can skip this app. For everyone else, UpCart is non-negotiable.
Pricing
UpCart has a free plan that covers the basics. Run the free plan for as long as you can — keep spamming "Not now" on the upgrade prompts until you're actually scaling.
The paid tiers unlock more upsell slots, advanced styling, and faster support. Worth it once you're at $1k/day baseline and the cart drawer is responsible for measurable revenue lift.
The setup that matters
Two Liquid snippets — the trust layer
UpCart provides two Liquid snippets that go in your theme. Both live in the description editor inside UpCart:
| Snippet | Where it goes | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Above Checkout | Above the checkout button | The "Trial Risk Free" badge — reduces friction at the moment of conversion |
| Below Checkout | Below the checkout button | The Trustpilot badge — adds third-party trust signal at the conversion moment |
Both are critical. They take 30 seconds to install and meaningfully reduce checkout abandonment.
The actual Liquid code is gatekept in the masterclass setup walkthrough — copy-paste, drop in, done.
Trust Badges → Payment Icons
In UpCart's settings, go to Trust Badges → Payment Icons → Enable.
This drops the Visa / Mastercard / Amex / PayPal / Apple Pay / Google Pay payment method icons into the cart drawer. Universal trust signal, costs nothing, do it on every store.
Free gift / claim mechanic (the cleanest implementation)
This is the cart-level mechanic that's cleaner here than inside Kaching Bundles. Cross-reference Kaching Bundles (sibling sub-page) — Brandon-rule there says skip Progressive Gifts inside Kaching and handle gifts here in UpCart instead.
The setup:
- Open the Upsells section in UpCart
- Remove the title on the upsell block (keep it clean, no "Add This Item" header)
- Set the CTA to "Claim Now" instead of "Add to Cart" (the framing matters — "Claim" feels free, "Add" feels like a purchase decision)
- Add your specific product (the ebook, the free sample, the bonus accessory)
- Set a trigger condition (e.g., "dial upsell product" — fires when the right product is in cart)
- Set as a block for easier setup
- Click Enable
When the customer clicks Claim, the gift adds to cart instantly. One click. No surprise. No price reveal needed because it's free.
Brandon-rule on cart-level extras: keep them simple. No titles, no descriptions, no extra copy. The cleaner the block looks, the more it converts. Visual noise in the cart drawer kills conversion.
Upsells vs free gifts
UpCart's upsell section can technically run paid upsells in addition to free gifts.
Don't start with paid upsells in the cart. Run paid upsells in Zipify OCU (post-purchase) where conversion mechanics are better and friction is lower. Cross-reference Zipify OCU (sibling sub-page).
Use the UpCart upsell section for free gifts only until you've validated the brand and want to test more aggressive cart-level offers.
The Urgency Timer (the closing trick)
This is the one styling element worth getting right.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Duration | 5 minutes (or 10 — same effect, pick one) |
| Background | None (no background fill behind the timer) |
| Status | Enabled |
| Time text | Bold |
| Border color | Remove (no border around the timer) |
Why 5 minutes: long enough to feel real, short enough to create genuine urgency. Anything under 5 feels manipulative. Anything over 10 doesn't create urgency.
The timer copy can be standard: "Your order is reserved for 4:59" or "Hurry — your cart expires in 4:59." Keep it clean, no excessive caps.
Design and layout
- Heading style: use Heading 2 for any section labels inside the drawer
- Layout orientation: I run mine on the side (right-side slide-out, not bottom modal)
- Background colors: if your brand has a strong color identity (purple, deep green, etc.), you can match the cart background to that color. Otherwise leave it white. White always looks clean and reads professional.
Don't over-design the cart drawer. The default styling with the trust badges, payment icons, and clean timer is enough to outperform Shopify's native cart by a meaningful margin. Save the heavy customization for the product page and advertorials.
What's in the cart drawer (final stack)
After full configuration:
[ Product image + name + qty + price ]
[ Free gift block — "Claim Now" CTA if eligible ]
[ Subtotal ]
[ Trust badge: "Trial Risk Free" ]
[ Checkout button ]
[ Trustpilot badge ]
[ Payment method icons row ]
[ Urgency timer: "Cart reserved for 4:59" ]Every element is doing a conversion job. Nothing in the cart is decoration.
Tracking and analytics
UpCart's dashboard shows cart-level metrics:
- Cart view rate
- Add-to-cart → checkout conversion
- Upsell take rate (if upsells are enabled)
- Free gift claim rate
Track these weekly. If your add-to-cart → checkout conversion is below 60-70%, something in the cart drawer is broken. Check rendering on mobile, check load speed, check whether the timer is firing correctly.
Cross-reference Microsoft Clarity (sibling sub-page) for session recordings of users in the cart drawer — Clarity catches rage clicks and broken interactions inside UpCart that the UpCart analytics dashboard won't surface.
When to skip UpCart entirely
The one scenario where UpCart isn't right:
Direct-to-checkout funnels. If your advertorial uses Kaching's checkout link feature to send customers directly to Shopify checkout (skipping the product page and cart), the cart drawer never appears. Cross-reference Module 7 → Advertorials Breakdown and Kaching Bundles (sibling sub-page) for the direct-to-checkout setup.
Most operators should still install UpCart because not all traffic goes through the advertorial-to-checkout path. Even on direct-to-checkout funnels, you'll have other traffic sources (organic, retargeting, email) that hit the product page → cart flow.
